Michael Popa

Roseville, MI Response CenterMike Popa has over thirty-five years of experience in oil and hazardous materials spill response and marine salvage and has participated in numerous major response operations.  In 1989, Mike headed up the team that lightered the remaining forty million gallons of oil that remained on board the grounded vessel M/T EXXON VALDEZ.  After the lightering operation was complete Mike then participated in the cleanup operations at Prince William Sound.  In 1991, Mike was part of the United Nation’s International Maritime Organization Team and participated as a member of the Inter-Agency Assessment Team that dealt with the massive oils spills that were unleashed during the Persian Gulf War (Desert Storm).    In 2007, Mike managed lightering and refloating operations of a number of barges that were pushed on shore by Hurricane Ike storm surge. Mike was part of the T&T Marine management team for the BP Deepwater Horizon Response overseeing near shore and offshore containment and recovery operations in Florida and Port Fourchon, La.  Other recent responses include Kalamazoo River Oil Spill, Lightering and Refloating of (2) grounded vessels on the Mississippi River M/V AROSA & M/V HANJIN ISTANBU as result of Hurricane Isaac, Hurricane Sandy Manhattan, NY Dewatering Operations, M/V SHANNON SETTOON Fire and Lightering Operation. Mike provided project management on (3) separate Salvage/ Pollution Ice Responses in the Great Lakes including Tug ANN MARIE (2010) Tug CHRIS LUETKE (2010), and Tug JANE ANN IV (2013)
